Soil Stabilisation Explained

Soil Stabilisation is used to improve the engineering properties of weak soils used for base courses, sub-base courses and subgrades with the use of lime or cement binder.

The long-term properties of the wet or weak soils will be vastly improved once rotavated and compacted.

Soil Stabilisation

  • Soil Stabilisation provides a sustainable construction solution by improving site-won material and reducing lorry movements

  • Expensive muck-away operations and import of costly aggregates can be replaced by using stabilisation to produce highway specification material with CBR values above and beyond site requirements.

Lime Stabilisation

  • Lime can be used to treat soils in order to improve their workability and load bearing strength.
  • Lime is frequently used to dry wet soils, reducing downtime and providing an improved work surface.
  • The use of lime will increase the stability, impermability and load-bearing capacity of weak site-won material.

Cement Stabilisation

  • Cement stabilisation will improve soils that are unsuitable for use on-site.
  • The addition of cement to weak soils will decrease plasticity and increase the bearing strength of the soils.
  • By increasing the shear strength of the soils, it will provide a stable, hard-wearing platform on which construction can take place.
